War Is Hell

Horst Fass took this photo. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who took many iconic photos during the Vietnam war. This photo has a ton of great qualities that make it hypnotic. The composition, the angle, and the focus of this photo all evoke emotion and tell a story with three simple words. “War is Hell.” This photo effortlessly conveys this soldier’s story of struggle and pain in the Vietnam war. The composition forces the viewer to look at his eyes and words, “War is hell.” The Vietnam war was different from past wars because of the increased media coverage. People had never seen soldiers depicted like this. Photos like these changed the way people viewed the war. The ability to change the way a person thinks, just through a photograph, is a high but impressive bar for success. That is why this is one of my favorite photographs.
