5 Objects

This assignment tasked me with photographing five objects with personal significance to me. To fully capture the objects I felt deeply about, I had to be mindful of the framing, lighting, and overall tone of each picture. However, since I just moved to school, many of the objects that are meaningful to me are still at home. And some were lost due to the move to school, exhibit A: my favorite water bottle.

Picture 1: This is the acorn that I was given at convocation. At the time, the ceremony felt phony, and I wanted nothing more than to leave it as soon as I can. But, as I grow at Elon, the acorn metaphor seems more and more fitting. I put it on a table next to the window to get a soft outdoor light and used the rule of thirds.

Picture 2: Although it may look simple, this fortune came to me at a significant time. It was when I first moved into Elon and got Pei Wei. I was apprehensive and nervous about school. I got this fortune and kept my head up, waiting for my joy. And soon enough, I made more friends, got involved on campus, and loved my classes! I framed this image where it sits on my desk, with loose change and papers. This object is in a commonplace, symbolic of where it is in my room. I have it somewhere I can always see it and remind myself to be patient.

Picture 3: This is one of my shoes, and like many people, I wear my shoes every day. So, they are meaningful to me. Every significant memory I’ve made in college have been in these shoes. So, when thinking of objects, I looked down and saw it right in front of me. So, I took off one of my shoes and placed it on the pavement. I attempted to get a low angle to create a unique perspective of the shoe and implemented the rule of thirds to draw a focus on the laces.

Picture 4: This is a mug I brought from home. I’ve had it for as long as I can remember. With so many fond memories in it, it feels like a little piece of home that I have at college. This photo was taken on a kitchen counter, and the rule of thirds was used to draw emphasis on the cup..

Picture 5: This is my alarm clock, my greatest enemy, and my greatest friend. Every day it ensures I get to class, and every day I slam my hand down on the snooze button, angry, I have to go to class. I shot this photo in lower light to try and capture the gloom and dread this alarm clock invokes in me. I also feel the simplicity of the framing focuses the picture only on the alarm clock.
